Drought return times in the Sahel: A question of attribution
نویسندگان
چکیده
[1] Recurrence times for extreme drought events in the African Sahel are estimated using a classical peaks-overthreshold model. Results, which are computed for both mean seasonal rainfall and fractional area in drought, suggest that the distribution of dry extremes after about 1970 is statistically distinct from that of preceding years. This finding throws into relief the critical role played by attribution of causes, and the necessity of improving our understanding of the physical processes driving precipitation variability in the Sahel. A multimodel study of the twentieth-century simulations of Sahel drought from the 1970s to 1990s
[1] In this paper, we evaluate the performance of 19 coupled general circulation models (CGCMs) in twentieth-century simulations of the Sahel during the 1970s to 1990s. Correlation, regression, and cluster analyses are applied to observations and model outputs including Sahel monthly precipitation, evaporation, soil moisture, and sea surface temperature (SST). We find that only eight CGCMs (hit...

The Sahel, the transition zone between the Saharan desert and the rainforests of Central Africa and the Guinean Coast, experienced a severe drying trend from the 1950s to the 1980s, from which there has been partial recovery. Continuation of either the drying trend or the more recent ameliorating trend would have far-ranging implications for the economy and ecology of the region. Coupled atmosp...

Drought monitoring is one of the key factors in drought risk management and the use of drought indices such as the standardized precipitation index (SPI) is a useful tool in this regard. The aim of this study is to evaluate and zone drought risk in different years and return periods in Karkheh basin. For this purpose, Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) as a selected index was used to assess...
متن کاملThe 1983 drought in the West Sahel: a case study
Some drought years over sub-Saharan west Africa (1972, 1977, 1984) have been previously related to a cross-equatorial Atlantic gradient pattern with anomalously warm sea surface temperatures (SSTs) south of 10 N and anomalously cold SSTs north of 10 N. This SST dipolelike pattern was not characteristic of 1983, the third driest summer of the twentieth century in the Sahel. This study presents e...
متن کاملOceanic forcing of the late 20th century Sahel drought
[1] The Sahel region of Africa underwent a pronounced interdecadal drying trend in the latter half of the 20th century. In order to investigate this drying trend, several ensembles of numerical experiments are conducted using a recently developed atmospheric general circulation model (AM2, developed at NOAA’s Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory). When the model is forced with the time series ...
